It's not business-as-usual when a fashion brand sponsors an event that doesn't have any of their clothes and is promoting second hand goods. Zady joins the ranks of sustainability-driven brands like Patagonia and Eileen Fisher in promoting second hand by being the sponsor for the Ethical Writers Coalition's third NYC swap. A big thank you to them for promoting all avenues to sustainability in addition to their new line of essentials.
This time, we rented the Glass House Gallery in Williamsburg and made good use of the split level space. On their way in, attendees received Ayla tote bags filled with discounts from some of our favorite sustainable brands — The True Cost, Magpie, The Base Project, and Helpsy. Downstairs, we treated guests to wine cocktails with Owl's Brew organic cocktail mixers in Susty Party sustainable partyware.
Downstairs also served to display the handmade artisan goods of A. Bernadette. Co-founder Andrea was there to mingle, share the stories of the Ugandan women supported by the brand, sell, and of course, swap.
We always seem to have just the right amount of women show up. This time there were about 40, including Sass Brown of Eco Fashion Talk and Lori Sutherland of Soul Style. Every time we throw a swap I'm amazed at the sisterly love that fills the room — the giggling, the consulting, the sharing. Everyone leaves in the spirit of conviviality and a little buzzed off the cocktails, which is the perfect way to be on a drizzly Saturday afternoon.
I noticed a few repeat attenders, but also met many new and lovely women. Adriana and Emma (pictured above) work for a non-profit called Voices Unbroken, which provides quality creative writing workshops in juvenile justice facilities and other alternative settings. These are the kinds of cool people you fail to meet if you don't attend our bi-annual swaps! If you live in NYC, sign up for the Ethical Writers Coalition newsletter so you don't miss any of our events.
