You may have noticed some changes around here. Now, I know that people notoriously and passionately hate when websites change, but let me tell you how much better things are now.
First, dear reader, I have struggled with designing a logo for a long time. Logos are one of the hardest things to design because you have to pack information, aesthetic, and emotions into a tiny space that looks good in various colors, sizes, and applications. I had a few that I used (but didn't really like) while I thought about it. I put it off for a long time, but since joining the Ethical Writers Coalition I have needed one several times. I went through many iterations and attempted to keep my previous title font, but eventually made the decision to change. This was no small feat because, despite Squarespace offering an incredible number of fonts, Zombie Checklist just wasn't one of them. So, with the help of Nathan, I learned a bit of CSS and manually added the font.
The Note Passer name reflects my background in education and my obsessive information gathering. I think the look and feel of the site previously reflected that more than the new look does. I'm a sustainability nerd now so while I still hoard information like an academic, I'd like to appear a little cooler (online at least!). A while back, I bought these floral images from Eclectic Anthology which were well worth buying. I use them all the time and threw one up as the background header for Facebook and Twitter. The floral signals my new environmental and sustainable interests without being too literal. The floral package has so many great options, I might even have a rotating series.
Finally, I made changes to the navigation and organization of the whole site. You are now called to action with FIND, READ, LEARN, and SHOP in the navigation. FIND is where you can search the site, categories, archives, or popular posts. READ is the "blog". I separated what was previously "Resources" into LEARN and SHOP. LEARN puts all of the ethical categories in one place for new readers to start with and old readers to return to, as well as links out to related organizations. SHOP has all of the shops from before plus more. They link out to the shops and brands I've vetted for you (I don't sell anything). They cover brands that are ethically sourced with regards to people and the environment, or are locally and responsibly made. Vintage and thrift options are inherently ethical because they use the existing pool of goods. Some of the shops now use affiliate links, which does not alter your price or my ethics (read my disclosure policy for more information). This infographic I created remains my guiding principle:
I hope these changes make things more streamlined and easier to find. The old "Resources" pages were getting to heavy to load in a reasonable amount of time. See? Better. But if you hate it, be gentle with me. If you can't find something, let me know. If you love it, well, thanks! I do too!
